Steam Trading Cards — Badges, Drops & Value Guide

How Steam trading cards drop while you play, what crafting a badge is worth in XP, and how to sell spare cards on the Steam Community Market for wallet funds.

How you earn Steam trading cards

Steam trading cards drop while you play participating games. Roughly every 15–30 minutes of playtime, Steam can grant you one card from that game's set, up to about half of the full set. The remaining half is meant to be completed through trading, the Steam Community Market, or booster packs — so a game with an 8-card set usually drops around 4 cards just from playing.

Booster packs are a second source: once you've received all the cards you can get from playing, you may occasionally be offered a free booster pack containing 3 random cards from a game you own. Eligibility builds with playtime, and other players can also craft your game's badge to add you to a booster pack queue.

Foil cards are rarer, shinier versions that drop only as part of special foil sets — typically a few percent chance per drop. They're worth more on the market, and a complete foil set crafts a separate foil badge.

Badges, levels and XP — what cards are worth

A complete regular set crafts the game's badge and is worth 100 Steam XP. Each time you craft the same badge again, the badge levels up (up to level 5) and you earn another 100 XP per level. Crafting the foil badge is a separate, one-time craft that grants its own XP on top.

Profile levels matter because they unlock real perks: level 10 unlocks the ability to show a showcase on your profile, higher levels grant friend slots (about 5 extra per level) and more showcase slots, and your level is displayed next to your name. That's why card sets are the cheapest way to level up on Steam — see our How to level up on Steam guide for the full XP math.

As a rule of thumb, the cost of a full set rises with its size: small sets (4–6 cards) often cost less per badge than large sets (9+ cards), but large sets give the same 100 XP — so small sets are usually the best XP per coin.

Selling cards on the Steam Community Market

Any card you own can be sold on the Steam Community Market for wallet funds. Open your Steam inventory, pick the card, click Sell, and choose a price — Steam shows what recent listings sold for. Funds land in your Steam wallet and can be spent on any game, DLC or in-game purchase.

What a card is worth: prices are driven by the game's popularity, the size of its set, and whether the card is foil. Most cards from small indie games sell for a few cents, while cards from popular or seasonal games can be worth noticeably more. Foil cards usually carry a premium over the regular version.

Sell or craft? A simple check before selling: look up your set's current completion cost. If buying the 2–3 missing cards costs less than you'd earn selling your duplicates, crafting the badge (100 XP + a chance at booster packs) is usually the better deal. If you already have the badge maxed, selling duplicates is free money.

Note that the market takes a fee on each sale, and newly purchased items have a short hold before they can be traded or sold — worth remembering if you're timing a sale.
